The natural environment of the club inspires us to ensure that our plants and the ground they grow in, are kept alive and healthy in the most natural way. Under the guidance of our supervising agronomist, Spiros Tsagaratos, our team of gardeners make use of the residues within our gardens and our Farm, to generate compost! This soil conditioner is a dark rich matter produced by the natural process that converts organic materials into compost. The first step in the production of compost, is to gather all the plant based residues from the maintenance of our gardens and our Farm. This includes substances such as leaves, cut grass and trimmed branches. Once the large branches have been reduced to wood chips, all the plant residues are transferred to an area which has been prepared with the special requirements needed for composting to take place. There, the residues are transformed into compost through a method called cold aerobic composting. This mimics the natural process that takes place in nature which produces a compost rich in beneficial microorganisms.
What is so special about compost? It is the ideal fertilizer for both the plants and the earth as it is rich in highly beneficial micro-organisms.
-
- It helps improve the structure of the soil while increasing its fertility.
- It is an environmentally friendly method, as it is essentially encourages nature’s own recycling process.
- It strengthens and improves the plants defense mechanism against diseases and insects.
- It saves water as it helps the earth maintain its humidity.
- It replaces chemical fertilizers and their ensuing harmful effects.
- It protects the environment by reducing the volume of material which ends up in landfills.
